Population Growth of Sagada

Population growth in Sagada based on National Statistics Office (NSO) data on census years shows an increasing trend from census year 1918 to census year 1970.

However, population dropped by 3.09% or 3,487 in 1980. From this period, the trend changed course with minimal increases of less than one percent during the succeeding census years. The highest population count was recorded in 1970 with twelve thousand nine hundred forty seven people (12,947) and the least was in 1918 when the municipality was still young. However, the highest growth rate was recorded in 1960 with 2.62% or a total of more than three thousand people over twelve years. This high growth rate was due to high birth rates which prompted the National Government to implement the Population Control Program. As a result of the program, the population growth rate dropped to a negative growth rate.

Aside from the Population Control Program, the lack of employment opportunities in the community pressed some of the labor age group to migrate. From one percent or a total of more than two hundred people over ten years. This could be due to out-migration of members of the labor force.
