Pasture lands are either communal or privately owned. Anyone from the ili who wants to raise cattle can utilize the designated pasturelands. The menpastol must see to it that the animals would not wander and eat crops of destroy small trees but putting up fences or tethering the animals.
The fences are either constructed (wood fences and tuping) or planted like dense rows of maguey. The pastolan are strategically located near deep trenches/canals and vertically scraped slopes which serve as natural fences.
To ensure the continuous supply of fodder, dried grasslands are sometimes burned to allow new growths of grass. This is usually done when rains are absent two to three days after the supposed onset of the rainy season (PHSSA 2007, 55-56).
